Hi! We’re Jeff & Megan Hamann! A couple of a thirty-something year olds creating our dream home, one project at a time. With Jeff’s expertise in construction and woodworking and Megan’s eye for design, we think we make a pretty great team. At the end of 2019, after being inspired by countless HGTV shows, we decided it was time to take the plunge and bought our first "fixer-upper." It's been a whirlwind of learning, hard work, and countless projects ever since. After an overwhelming number of messages and questions we received on our personal accounts, we decided to create a dedicated space to document our home transformation.
We created Home with the Hamann’s on Instagram to share our struggles, victories, and all the resources we wish we had before starting our renovation. We’ve learned that factors like the housing market, time, and budget might not always allow us to have our “dream” home when and how we want it, but that only means it’s time to get creative and to make something beautiful right where we are.
If you're looking for budget-friendly DIYs and home renovation tips, you’re in the right place. We hope you’ll join us on our journey and find inspiration in learning to love the home you’re in!

I spent most of my childhood wishing for a home where I felt safe and at peace. A place I could come home to after a long day, be 100% authentically myself, and rest and recharge. Since a young age, I’ve been drawn to making my spaces feel inviting, cozy, and warm. So much of my childhood was spent repainting my room and rearranging the same furniture pieces 100 different ways. I loved being able to express myself through my room and that love has grown with me into adulthood. I’m just glad I outgrew my obsession with the color hot pink and zebra print though! Haha.
Finding my design style has been a journey over the past 3 years and there has been a lot of trial and error! Your design style should be a reflection of your personality, interests, and lifestyle all rolled into one. On this journey I often had to remind myself not to be afraid to experiment and mix different styles until I found what felt right for me. It’s been a process of learning to trust my instincts and embrace what truly speaks to me while reminding myself that my style may evolve over time, and to allow myself the freedom to explore, experiment, and have fun along the way!
Over the last couple of years DIY and design has almost become a type of therapy for me. I am very open on our social media about losing multiple close family members in a short amount of time and the difficulties that come along with that grief. At times it has been hard to even get out of bed because grief is an all consuming darkness. Having a purpose and completing even the smallest task like painting a wall or decorating a console table helps take my mind off things and gives me a reason to get out of bed. DIY and design has been a creative outlet that I am so thankful for!
Jeff's introduction to creation and hands-on work began in the early 2000s. He watched his father, a K-12 principal, transform stocks of maple and ash into baseball bats on a lathe in the school wood shop. The following summer, his family undertook a home improvement project, tearing down their old deck and building a new one. Jeff was fascinated by the process, observing his dad and his siblings as they laid out the supporting structure, and eagerly waiting for his turn to help fasten the deck boards.
By the time Jeff entered his freshman year of high school, he was certain to enroll in Woods and Drafting classes. He later joined the construction class, where students built a home each school year to be sold in the community. This hands-on experience allowed Jeff's skills to grow exponentially, and he began to understand the importance of quality workmanship in home building. During his college years and after earning an education degree, Jeff spent his summers gaining practical experience in various trades, including roofing, hardscaping, landscaping, and finishing work such as drywall, flooring, doors, windows, and hardware. On the side, Jeff also did some woodworking for a supplementary source of income. He eventually landed a position as an estimator and project manager with a general contractor.
When we bought our first home, Jeff was eager to apply the skills and knowledge he had accumulated over the years. This marked the beginning of a new chapter, where Jeff's passion for building and craftsmanship found a permanent place in his life.
Through our own renovation journey and discussions with those in our online community we’ve learned that circumstances such as the housing market, time, budget, etc. may not always allow us to have our “dream” home when and how we want it. But that doesn’t mean we can’t find joy and love the spaces that we’re currently in! It’s up to us to create something beautiful right where we are.
We love showing our community the entire process of realistic quick DIYs and more extensive renovations that can be completed in their home as well. Instagram can be overwhelming at times seeing giant homes with home decor that is 3x that of our monthly mortgage. We’re here to remind our followers that they don’t need a bigger home or expensive things to create a beautiful home that they love!
We met in high school and used to spend our Saturday nights bowling at “rock n’ bowl”, we love to travel (our favorite trips so far were to Kauai where we swam with sea turtles and to Banff where we spent countless hours hiking) , our favorite shows are Big Brother and The Great British Bake Off, we have a miniature dachshund puppy named Birdie who makes appearances in in our stories and in campaigns often, Jeff loves to cook I (Megan) hate it, Jeff used to umpire professional baseball.
