If you would have told me 4 years ago when we started HWTH that we would go viral on the internet and receive death threats for painting our bathroom ceiling green I would have laughed and said you were crazy.
10 million views later, the above came true and our tiny guest bathroom has divided the internet! The comment section is a 50/50 split of people either loving it or being super vocal about how much they hate it. This reel showed me how crazy of a place the internet can really be. Jeff and I even made a game out of sitting down after work some nights and reading out loud the most insane comments we could find!
Regardless, those hundreds of comments of protest couldn’t/won’t change my mind on how much I LOVE a statement ceiling. In the design world, the ceiling is often referred to as the “5th wall”. When painting a room people usually focus on the typical 4 walls and ceilings are an afterthought. By leaving a ceiling blank you’re missing out on an area that could enhance the overall design of the room! I’d say 99% of people’s ceilings are the standard white and to be honest seeing the same thing over and over in every single house you enter can feel a little boring. I like the idea of injecting some unexpected color into a space!
Often times when people think about painting a ceiling a dark color they immediately think “That will make the room feel so small”. Contrary to popular belief, A dark ceiling can actually open up a space and can create the illusion that the ceilings are higher than they really are. For example, in our bathroom space, we went with a darker green color (Rosemary by Sherwin Williams) and bright white walls to help balance the space and draw your eye up! Every time you walk into the space your eyes are immediately drawn up to the ceiling due to the contrast and it tricks your eye into thinking the ceilings are higher than they actually are!
Have you experimented with painting your ceilings? I’d love to hear if you have in the comments below!
